WATCH: #AtlantaFX season 2 ep 11 ‘Crabs In A Barrel’ [full ep]

In Episode 11, Earn runs around town trying to finish everything before catching a plane so that his cousin Alfred, aka Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry), can go on a European tour with Clark County (RJ Walker).  Why Earn waited until that day to make sure that Darius’ (Lakeith Stanfield) passport was still valid (nope) and for movers to come isn’t clear, but as the passport expediter observed, “Rappers are procrastinators. No offense.”

Each of his appointments reminds Earn of how he’s failing in life on all fronts: The entertainment lawyer they consider doesn’t meet Alfred’s expectations for high-profile clientele or Jewishness, the movers won’t respect Earn’s authority until he bribes them, and his daughter Lottie (Mia Atehortua) needs both tuition for a better school and more of his presence as a father. With the threat of Alfred firing him once they get to Europe — since that would allow Earn to at least see the world a bit first — it looks like Earn is on the brink of losing everything.

Recalling times from middle school, with an expression of thanks for Miller Grove.
In the present day, Al and Earn have come to a crossroads. Al’s ready to level up in his career and Earn is little more than dead weight.

“FUBU” offers the first substantial glimpse into their past, revealing that Al has a decades-old history of carrying his cousin.

This week, we’re flashing back to the late ’90s, where a teenage Earn is stuck shopping with his mother. As any bored kid would do, he wanders off to explore something more interesting than down market home décor (though he’s a little long in the tooth for playfully plowing through the racks the way he does). He can’t believe his luck when he stumbles upon a neon yellow FUBU jersey, a rare hip-hop fashion find amid the store’s non-designer dreck. AND this is where the DRAMA begins and we get a GLIMPSE of just how long Al has been ‘CARRYING’ his cousin and where that DERIVED from.

#AtlantaFX stars #DonaldGlover #LakeithStanfield & #BrianTyreeHenry dance to #TLC’s ‘Creep in deleted scene! [vid]

As if this show was not DOPE enough, the deleted scenes are even more so. If you recall the latest episode of ‘Atlanta’ found Paperboi and crew performing at a college ‘PAJAMA JAM’ clad in SILKY PJ’s. The whole scene harkened back to the iconic movie ‘Houseparty’, but when I saw Al, Earn and Darius’ gear, my mind IMMEDIATELY went to TLC’s stylish and ICONIC ‘Creep’ video.

Well in a DELETED scene that executive producer and director, Hiro Murai decided to GIFT to the fans, we see the TRIO bustin’ a move to the UBER-POPULAR song by TLC! Continue reading #AtlantaFX stars #DonaldGlover #LakeithStanfield & #BrianTyreeHenry dance to #TLC’s ‘Creep in deleted scene! [vid]

The possibility arises to make a move; it is believed Paper Boi will be at a pajama party.  This episode includes an angry black mob, naked frat boys snapping to ‘Laffy Taffy’ a Confederate flag and Earn completely coming UNDONE!

The 30 minutes come in three distinct acts. First, at the concert, tension builds when a simple misunderstanding escalates into an all-out brawl. Second, at the frat house, Paper Boi’s crew takes refuge. And finally, in the car, Earn and Tracy fight.

It coalesces into Earn’s explosive frustration, which speaks to Glover’s continued goal to share what it’s like to be black in America. Taken as a whole, it’s an episode that’s both painful and frustrating, and shows the contrasting worlds—specifically around southern college life. It’s a credit to Glover that he’s willing to, and capable of, putting these powerful and necessary discussions into a half-hour comedy. WATCH ‘Atlanta’ season 2 episode 9 BELOW!

It is believed wealth has something to do with Paper Boi’s attitude.

This week, Atlanta explores the trappings of fame as Paper Boi attempts to navigate his own life, which is stuck somewhere between local celebrity and as another struggling man in the city. It opens with the rapper asleep on the couch getting nagged by his mother. When he finally leaves the house, he hangs out with a woman bothering him about his public image. This has long been something Paper Boi has been struggling with: his public persona as a successful rapper, and his private persona as a regular guy. He grapples with depression, anxiety, and money problems—all topics that hip-hop music rarely addresses.

He walks out on his not-girlfriend when she tries to take a photo of him during a fake-ass pedicure and ends up shuffling home on foot. On a lonely stretch of road, Paper Boi comes across a group of kids arguing about Star Wars. In an instant—like it did in this season’s opening sceneAtlanta flips from the innocent to hostile. When Paper Boi’s interaction with the young fans grows uncomfortable, they try to rob him at gunpoint. He fights back, taking one of them down after they get off a few punches. With one kid on the ground, he takes off into the woods. Paper Boi is suddenly lost in the trees and comes across a homeless man who speaks in riddles and prophecies—or maybe he’s just high. As day turns to night, the homeless man continues to follow Paper Boi. The rapper sits on a tree stump ready to give up.

“You better stand up and make a decision about how you getting out of here,” the man says before pulling out a box cutter and putting it to Paper Boi’s throat. “Keep standing still you’re gone boy. You’re wasting time. And the only people who got time are dead. And if you’re dead I’m gonna take your shoes, and your wallet, and that shirt.”

A tear goes down Paper Boi’s cheek as he makes a decision: “Okay,” he says.

He chooses to go for it. And in the final scene, when a kid in the gas station asks Paper Boi for a photo, the rapper agrees. Covered in blood, he finally leans into the fame thing—an indication that he’s going to take an active role in advancing his career.

Yeah girl, we gonna party tonight! But if you don’t post about it, did it really happen?..Partying activities are called into question if they are not posted on social media.

During a New Year’s Eve party that takes place at Drake’s mansion, Darius (Lakeith Stanfield) engages in conversation with Nadine (Gail Bean), who is tripping and doesn’t know what’s real or what’s imagined. As one does at parties, he launches into a cogent discussion of Bostrom’s simulation argument. It’s a philosophical and scientific hypothesis that in the future, technological advancements will be able to run large-scale computer simulations that could recreate the past and our ancestors, who are themselves conscious simulations. If this hypothesis is true, the reality that we are living could be one such simulation. In short, everything is an illusion.   After seeing cheery Instagram photos and stories of her ex Earn (Donald Glover), she wants to one-up him to prove that she’s not at all heartbroken and that in fact, she’s living a better life than he is (or at least more than just pics of her daughter and chicken that are currently populating her stories).

You know how you need a fresh cut but your barber is always on some wack stuff? He’s lucky I only trust him…
The “black barbershop as sacred space” trope isn’t new; it’s made the rounds in Hollywood, the art world, academia and beyond. Unfortunately for Al, this week’s visit to a no-frills strip mall spot is steeped in none of the barbershop’s fabled camaraderie, current events catch-ups or stress release. When he stops in to get “the usual,” what he gets instead is all the worst barbershop experiences rolled into one, then exaggerated to the nTh degree and spun through the signature “Atlanta” absurdist filter.

Whether you’re a chair regular or a shop newbie, there are some cut day experiences that are universal. Tardiness, personal calls and mid-cut snacking are all garden variety annoyances. From the moment that cape snaps up, you expect to hear about the barber’s personal life and know full well you’ll be forced to watch some viral clips on a smartphone.

Al’s barber does all of this in only the first three minutes. Played to shifty perfection by standup comedian Robert Powell III, the fast-talking hustler Bibby traps Al in a bottle episode of sorts. They may not be bound to one specific location, but all of the action revolves around the two men making their way through a seemingly endless to-do list.

When you go outside the city white people be acting different. That’s why I can’t even go to Marietta. Too weird.

“We can be good together, but only when we really have to be. And I’m slowly figuring out that maybe we don’t have to.”

That’s the sound of Van waking up to the reality of her situationship with Earn. It takes her a full day to get there, but she finally arrives.

The episode kicks off with Van getting her way … in more ways than one. Not only is Earn tending to her needs physically, he’s also agreed to accompany her to an out-of-town Oktoberfest gathering that she’s been looking forward to.

Echoes of “Get Out” ring clear during their drive. They’ve left Atlanta for the village of Helen (located in Georgia’s White County, mind you) and while cruising through the countryside, they very nearly run into a wild boar in the road. (In the film, it’s a deer.) Any fears you may have already harbored for this young black couple’s safety are now heightened, as you imagine what kind of horrors may await them at their predominantly-white destination.

But Van’s not a bit worried about how the festivalgoers will treat Earn; it’s more the other way around. “I just don’t think you’re going to like it up there,” she says, smoking weed to calm her nerves.
