Remember before Nicki Minaj released her latest album, ‘Queen’ she said there was a TRACK that she REALLY wanted on the album, but couldn’t get the sample cleared? She even proposed HOLDING the project until she could get the record cleared. That song was ‘Sorry’ featuring Nas and COMPRISES reworked lyrics and music from Tracy Chapman’s ‘Baby can I Hold You’.
Well the song DID NOT make the album, but it did make the rounds. FunkMaster Flex played it and so did “TheBreakfast Club”. So NOW Chapman is taking Nicki to COURT!
Tracy is suing for an order prohibiting Nicki and her team from releasing the song again and wants to be PAID for DAMAGES. In the suit, Chapman claims that Nicki’s song “incorporates the lyrics and vocal melody of [“Baby Can I Hold You”], its most recognizable and memorable parts.” And that Nicki used “these parts of [“Baby Can I Hold You”] without first seeking the authorization to do so.” In addition, the suit states that Champan’s track’s “lyrics and vocal melody comprise approximately half of [“Sorry”], and are easily recognizable and identifiable as Chapman’s.”
So my question to Tracy is, since you BLOCKED the release of the song ad now you want COMPENSATION for it being LEAKED, once it’s paid can Nicki release the song then? I mean if you are getting paid, wy not just RELEASE the sample?. IJS?
We shall see how this turns out….
