I have not been a FAN of Justin Timberlake since ‘Nipplegate’. I have expressed why on NUMEROUS platforms. In short, HIS PRIVILEGE allowed him to get off ‘SCOTT FREE’ for the wardrobe malfunction that he cause, while Janet Jackson bore the BRUNT of the CRITICISM and SHAME.
So my opinion maybe a bit HARSH to say the least. I caught the HIGHLIGHTS of this year’s HALFTIME SHOW. I was busy REPRESENTING #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay’ to bother to tune it. But I DID catch the HIGHLIGHTS of the performance. While it was a GREAT idea and fitting to TRIBUTE Prince–he is an ICON of the ages, and your are in his BACKYARD. It makes sense–in THEORY. But in EXECUTION, NO. Prince spoke in DEPTH about his DISTASTE for holograms and technology that ALTERS reality.
A 1998 interview between Prince and Guitar World has resurfaced, where the Purple Rain creator disapproved of the idea of playing with holograms of artists.
“With digital editing, it is now possible to create a situation where you could jam with any artist from the past. Would you ever consider doing something like that?,” the interviewer asked to which Prince responded:
Certainly not. That’s the most demonic thing imaginable. Everything is as it is, and it should be. If I was meant to jam with Duke Ellington, we would have lived in the same age. That whole virtual reality thing… it really is demonic. And I am not a demon. Also, what they did with that Beatles song [“Free As a Bird”], manipulating John Lennon’s voice to have him singing from across the grave… that’ll never happen to me. To prevent that kind of thing from happening is another reason why I want artistic control.
Fast forward to JT’s performance..
Justin Timberlake under fire after giving a tribute to Prince during the SuperBowl Halftime Show despite Prince’s public statements against Timberlake and Prince’s strong beliefs against technology like the one used to present Prince as a hologram. #Prince pic.twitter.com/z1tqRQHPiP

Dear #JustinTimberlake,
At best your performance was mediocre & boring. Adding @Prince didn’t help the performance, he probably shading you in heaven. Hell, @IAmCardiB could’ve performed her 3 songs & satisfied us. It’s a hard no for me. @JTimberlake #BringBackOurJanet pic.twitter.com/UzkPgoLBDK
